Being a Pilgrim

The people walking the Camino are called Pilgrims, or Peregrinos. As such, we seem to feel an amount of connection to one another, not every single person, but in general. As I’ve walked I’ve reflected on some possible parallels between the pilgrimage here on the Camino and the Christian life. Here are some of my thoughts:

Although we are tired, achy and thirsty, we hate the thought of ending the trek. We don’t question, should I do this tomorrow? We just get up and do it. We occasionally take a rest day or afternoon, but we will be back at it soon!

Although fellow pilgrims can sometimes be annoying, there is still a respect because “that person, regardless of how annoying, has walked hundreds of miles before today.

Fellow pilgrims come from many countries, lots of languages, and varied opinions on lots of things, I’m sure, but there is much that unites us: we have a definite end point in mind, we want follow pilgrims to complete their walk too, we are doggedly making our way to Santiago. We are not competing against one another. We are all going in the same direction. We welcome indications of the correct direction to go because we want to make sure to wind up in the right place.
